Mission Viejo, CA (May 2, 2013) – Holt Integrated Circuits announced the introduction of HI-8470, a 16-channel discrete-to-digital sensor with built-in ARINC 429 transmitter. All sense input thresholds and ARINC 429 transmission control are programmed via logic level input pins, eliminating the need for a microprocessor or software interface. This product excels in applications where the user needs a simple interface between aircraft sense data and an ARINC 429 bus, significantly reducing or eliminating the cost associated with software certification.
The IC has 16 channels for sensing Open/Ground or 28V/Open signal levels. Sensor voltage thresholds are user programmable from preset internal levels or external input pins. Sense input thresholds may be set to CMOS logic levels for interface with other sensors, such as an external ADC .
An on-chip ARINC 429 transmitter / line driver transmits the status of discrete sense lines in ARINC 429 format with pin-programmed label byte value, repetition rate and transmission speed. Configuration and operation of the HI-8470 is fully controlled by CMOS logic pins, without using an MCU or software. The device uses an on-chip DC/DC converter to generate the required ARINC 429 line voltages from a 3.3V supply. In addition, the discrete sense pins and line driver outputs are lightning protected to RTCA/DO-160G, Section 22 Level 3 Pin Injection Test Waveform Set A (3 & 4), Set B (3 & 5A) and Set Z (3 & 5B) without the use of any external components, resulting in reduced component count and cost savings for the application. The user simply needs a single 3.3V power supply and a 1 MHz clock source, for ARINC 429 bit timing and word transmission rate scheduling.
“This product effortlessly interfaces aircraft sensors to an ARINC 429 bus,” said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt. Eliminating a microprocessor and software from the application simplifies certification and translates into significant dollar savings.”
The device is available in industrial −40oC to +85oC and extended −55oC to +125oC temperature ranges and comes in a 100‑pin PQFP package.
